Danantara Indonesia is promoting the development of the downstream nickel industry through investment partnerships with strategic investors from various countries. The initiative aims to strengthen the industrial value chain while supporting the development of an integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem in Indonesia.
Pahala Nugraha Mansury, Managing Director of Global Relations and Communications at Danantara Indonesia, said the organization could leverage Danantara Investment Management (DIM) to identify partners with the expertise needed to develop production facilities and invest jointly in Indonesia.
He cited downstream initiatives undertaken by the MIND ID Group through several of its subsidiaries and affiliates, namely PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum), PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam), and Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). These entities are pursuing downstream industrial development in partnership with prospective and existing investors from various countries.
“Another example is the work being carried out by our colleagues at MIND ID. Through Inalum, Antam, and IBC, they are pursuing downstream development by partnering with prospective investors and other investors from overseas,” Pahala said, as quoted on Monday, October 26, 2026.
He explained that nickel downstreaming involves several interconnected stages of production, ranging from processing nickel into mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) and nickel sulfate to manufacturing cathodes, battery cells, and battery packs.
Developing this production chain requires investment at multiple stages to establish an integrated battery industry ecosystem. Within the MIND ID Group, several entities play complementary roles across the value chain. Antam is involved in nickel mining, while IBC contributes to the development of the battery ecosystem.
“Collaboration with strategic investors is one approach to supporting downstream industrial development and the production of higher-value-added products. However, the sector also faces challenges in terms of capital requirements and certainty of raw material supplies,” he said.
