PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (BREN) has increased its total installed geothermal capacity to 935.55 megawatts (MW) after completing the retrofit of Unit 3 at the Darajat Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in Garut, West Java.
Barito Renewables President Director, Hendra Soetjipto Tan said the company was moving closer to its target of reaching 1 gigawatt (GW) of installed capacity by the end of 2026. The retrofit forms part of the company’s asset optimization efforts to increase power generation capacity while strengthening the supply of clean electricity.
“Darajat Unit 3 demonstrates what can be achieved through disciplined asset optimization. We are now operating one of the largest single-unit geothermal power plants in the country,” Hendra said in an official statement on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Through its subsidiary, Star Energy Geothermal Darajat II, BREN increased Unit 3’s capacity from 122 MW to 130.55 MW. The upgrade also raised the total capacity of the Darajat geothermal complex to 280.55 MW.
With this achievement, BREN’s installed geothermal capacity has risen from 886 MW when the company went public on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in October 2023 to 935.55 MW currently.
“The retrofit project was completed on schedule, in accordance with the contract, and without any safety incidents. The upgraded unit has also delivered performance exceeding the levels guaranteed under the contract,” Hendra said.
Star Energy Geothermal awarded the retrofit contract to Mitsubishi Power in October 2024. The project involved upgrading several facilities at Unit 3, including the installation of a new steam turbine manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
In addition to completing the project, Star Energy Geothermal and PT Mitsubishi Power Indonesia signed a technical study and cooperation agreement to explore ways to improve turbine performance and enhance the reliability and availability of Units 2 and 3 at the Darajat geothermal power plant.
For BREN, increasing capacity through the optimization of existing power plants is one of the strategies to approach its 1 GW target by the end of this year.
The additional capacity also strengthens geothermal energy’s contribution as a reliable baseload electricity source that can operate consistently without depending on weather conditions.
